Terminology
Rough Opening? This is the size of the opening doors will fit into. We will reduce
the width and height of the actual door assembly by 1/2 in. This allows extra room for
leveling and shimming.
Door assembly? Jamb, door and threshold as a unit.
Jamb? Jamb is the frame that supports the doors. Our quality roller bearing hinges
come in two pieces and are joined together with a pin. One half is welded to the door
stile and the other half is welded to the jamb.
Jamb depth? Door jambs can be customized to interface with 2x4, 2x6 or other wall
thickness. Jambs can double as lintels for brick and cast stone. Stucco and concrete
too!
Installation flange? Our installation flange is 1/8" x 1-1/2” angle iron welded along
the outside perimeter of the door jamb. This angle iron further reinforces the jamb
and is perforated for installation ease. It is inset 5/8" from the interior wall surface to
allow the sheet rock to terminate.
Stiles? Vertical members of a door frame. Handle sets, dead bolt and roller latch are
installed on the stile. Standard stiles are 5" wide by 2" deep. 12 Ga. steel.
Rails? Horizontal members of a door frame. Top rail interfaces with the top of the
jamb and the bottom rail interfaces with the threshold. Standard rails are 5" wide by
2" deep. 12 Ga. steel.
Roller latch? An adjustable heavy duty spring loaded roller latch is mortised into
the strike side of a stile. This component holds a door shut similar in function to the
snapping action that holds a fine cabinet door closed.
12 Ga. steel.? Alamo Designs door frames are thick. Gauge refers to steel frame
thickness. As a point of reference, 12 ga. is approx. the thickness of a US silver dollar.
14 ga. is approx. the thickness of a US quarter and 16-18 ga. is less than that of a US
dime! This is important.
Threshold? Sometimes called a saddle. This component interfaces the floor with
door bottom and flush bolt (on double doors). You step on the threshold.
Flush bolt? A flush bolt is used to secure the inactive leaf of a double door.
Glass panel? Functional interior glass panels are welded and hinged onto the inside
of all doors. This feature allows for ease of cleaning, guarded ventilation and package
exchange. 1/4", 1/2" and 5/8" are popular glass thickness'. We do not provide glass...
most glass companies remove the panel and return it with glass installed.
